5 Master Shots in Film

Parallelism

In the 1990 movie Home Alone, the director shows parallelism. In this example, the two burglars are filmed from the waist-up, not realizing that they are each in the same room. This is a very funny scene because they had planned on robbing the house, but Kevin sets up traps to humiliate them. The director emphasizes the shot at the parallel features of their expressions and disrupted state.

Simultaneity

The Princess Diaries, a movie filmed in 2001 has a perfect example of simultaneity. In this scene, the main character, Mia, goes to a beach party with her crush, and misses her friends news segment on accident. The clip cuts back and forth between the party and the newsroom, signifying that both events are happening at the same time. This scene could also be seen as contrast because the party feels fun and exciting, while Lily, her friend, is bored by the stand-in magician.

Contrast
I found an example of contrast in the movie Hidden Figures. In this scene, Katherine Goble has to run to the west side of the NASA Center because there are no black bathrooms in the main center. She must run a half mile there and back. These clips cuts between her running and the director looking for her in the office. This scene emphasizes the difference in how white men and black women were treated.

Symbolism
This scene in the Disney film, Shrek, uses many elements of symbolism. Shrek and Fiona were forced to not see each other moments before this scene. They had fallen in love but the king had taken Fiona back to the palace for their wedding. The first use of symbolism is the cut from Shrek's reflection in the broken glass to Fiona's reflection in the chandelier, both with sad expressions on their face. Another example seen in this clip is between the fire at the cabin to the fireplace at the castle. Fiona prepares for her wedding and places her veil over her face, transitioning to the king placing his crown on his head. The scene cuts back to Fiona, as she looks at the armor in her dressing room. The final cut takes place, from the armor to Shrek, alone in his shack. These editing techniques amplify the distance between the two. It uses symbols in the clips to connect the two settings, and ultimately show the heartbreak and sorrow that Shrek and Fiona feel. This scene could also be seen as simultaneity because everything is happening at the same time.

Leit Motif

For my example of a leit motif, I used the 1939 movie, Wizard Of Oz. In this clip, Miss. Gulch rides her bike down the dirt road in Kansas. Dorothy feared her as a child because she would always yell at her and threaten to take her dog. The melody is a leit motif because whenever you hear the tune, you know it is Miss Gulch. When it is used during the scene where the Wicked Witch of the West is sending monkeys after Dorothy and her friends, the viewers make the connection between Miss Gulch and the witch. This helps the audience realize that Oz is all just Dorothy's dream, and she is basing it off of real people from Kansas.
